NEW DELHI: Andhra Pradesh has taken the lead in generating energy through waste, as 16 states created a total of over 4100 million units of power using waste material, the Lok Sabha was informed today.
Power Minister Piyush Goyal said while Andhra Pradesh created 1161.62 million units of power using waste, Delhi produced 355.94 million units.
The data showed 4134.45 million units of power was generated using waste by 16 states between 2012-13 and 2014-15.
He said the Ministry on New and Renewable Energy was implementing a program on energy from urban, industrial and agricultural wastes and residues.
Under the program, five pilot projects based on municipal solid waste are being set up. Incentives like concessional customs duty, excise duty exemption, accelerated depreciation, 10 years income tax holiday and preferential tariff for grid-connected waste to power as well as bio-CNG production projects are available, he said.
The ministry has set a target of 500 MW from waste to energy projects during the 12th Five Year Plan period. -PTI
