HOUSTON, TX: Houston NRIs have welcomed the decision of the Indian Government to accept representatives from civil society for drafting the Lokpal Bill following the anti-corruption campaign of Anna Hazare.
Houston NRIs gathered at Mahatma Gandhi statue in Herman Park on April 11, did a candlelight vigil and discussed about their next plan of action. In support of the Jan Lokpal bill to eliminate corruption, the Houston NRIs started a signature campaign to mobilise people and get them involved. In the University of Houston, around 300 signatures were collected to support this cause.
5th pillar www.5thpillar.org and people for Loksatta www.peopleforloksatta.org have been in the forefront with other organisations like Bharat Swabhiman, Ekal Vidyalaya etc in spreading awareness among concerned citizens to take the responsibility to make India a corruption-free country. Speaking on the occasion, Raghava Solipuram from 5th Pillar said, “We need to persevere in this work and make our voices heard to policy makers in the form of vote. Now that NRIs can vote, they should vote only for people who will make the Jan Lokpal bill a reality. Many students and other people with various backgrounds participated in this event. Among the participants were Hyma, Sandeep, Vijay, Sanjitha, Shankar, Praveen, Dinesh, Prasad, Srinivas, Pavan and many more.
Raghava said the Lokpal bill has been pending for decades and we want to have this bill passed and implemented by incorporating the recommendations from Jan Lokpal bill by August 15, “which is a Herculean task. This can definitely be done if there is commitment and willingness from both ruling party and opposition. For this to happen, all concerned people of India must be with this process all the time.”
