Deepavali at Indo American Center

CHICAGO: Seniors in Chicago celebrated Deepavali festival with gusto and lot of fanfare at Indo American Center (IAC). Over 200 seniors attended the event that was coordinated successfully by Govindbhai Limbachia, an IAC volunteer and worker.

The start was with Geeta Chawla lighting the ceremonial lamp. This was followed by a talk by Sudaksha Kapur on the importance and significance of Deepavali, the Festival of Lights. The highlights of the near three hours program were singing of songs and bhajans, rendering shayri and ghazal. The DJ music was from Shiv Chawla who has been rendering his services at no cost.

Mohammed Kadri sang Navratri Ki Rat Na Puchho and Diwali ki Baat Na Puchho while Naresh Shah rendered shayari pleasing all those present. Neeru Singh presented a poem while Kirit Shah staged a mono-acting play. Adam Usman sang a song urging God to be “our guest”.

Jay Luthra, managing director of IAC, proposed a vote of thanks and expressed satisfaction at the large presence of seniors. The ending was with Gujarati Dandiya Raas participated by many. There was a raffle also and a young girl pulled out the winning numbers. Mouth watering dishes were served – Farsnand sweets were from Lalben Rabari while Malekben Lala served ice cream. Govind Limbachia thanked everybody for their support.
