CHICAGO: Apna Ghar, a Chicago-based organization that provides in addition to an emergency shelter and transitional housing, a variety of programs and services for victims of domestic violence, will celebrate its 20th anniversary on Sunday, November 14 with a fund-raising gala at the Carlisle Banquet Hall in Lombard, a south west Chicago suburb.
Shyam Benegal, award winning Indian film director will be the Keynote Speaker and Professor Margaret Abraham, Professor of Sociology at Hofstra University in New York will be the Guest of Honor.
Recipient of the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan, Benegal’s films Bhumika, Ankur and Manthan have created awareness around women’s issues. Abraham is the author of the acclaimed book Speaking the Unspeakable: Marital Violence among South Asian Immigrants in the United States. She has been involved in research and activism in the field of domestic violence in the South Asian immigrant community for more than a decade. Acclaimed Natya Dance Theater will perform a specially choreographed dance sequence.
The mission of Apna Ghar is to break the cycle of domestic violence through culturally appropriate, multilingual services, including emergency shelter and transitional housing. While serving all domestic abuse survivors, they address the special needs and challenges of immigrants from South Asian and other countries. In addition to the shelter and transitional housing, clients receive counseling, legal aid and case management services. Apna Ghar has Supervised Child Visitation and Safe exchange program as well. Funds raised from this year’ sponsorships will go toward paying off the mortgage for the new shelter.
To date Apna Ghar has hosted 19 successful fundraisers. In the ‘Taste for Life’ event Chief Chef Sanjeev Kapoor (India) and Chief Chef Vikas Khanna (NY) along with local chefs/restaurants participated.
