FOG Spring Festival celebrated at Fremont temple

IMG 1810FREMONT, CA: FOG Spring festival and Holi was celebrated at Fremont Hindu Temple on April 7. 15 groups and over 100 participants performed at the event which was attended by over 300 locals. Dances were based on the Holi and Spring festivals such as Vishu, Ugadi, Tail Puthandu, Poila Baisakhi etc.

Spring brings with it a sense of rejuvenation and coming back to life after the winter, and in the vast nation of India, there are several different festivals that bring people together to enjoy the season. Many of these festivals have religious reasons behind them, while others are traditional and have been held in certain areas down the generations.

Ugadi New Year festival is one that usually falls in March or occasionally in April, and is celebrated by the people in Andhra and Telangana. There are several traditions that are enjoyed throughout the festival but the family meals are best known, with a traditional dish that is made with Neem buds, jaggery, green chili, salt, tamarind juice and unripened mango, with each ingredient chosen to signify six emotions that IMG 1722people can feel.

Baisakhi is a harvest festival in Punjab. It is one of the most popular events during the year in the region, with funfairs being common, and the event falling on 13 April every year. The community usually comes together to harvest the wheat, and those who aren’t involved in harvesting will play drums to keep the people going. After the harvesting, the Bhangra is a traditional dance that is a big part of the evening’s celebrations with the whole community celebrating together.

Jyotsna Bendapudi Sharma, FOG Cultural Chair had arranged for the cultural programs and the two hour show served as a platform for the young kids to showcase their talents. Dr.Romesh Japra, Chairman, FOG and Rajesh Verma, President, FOG thanked the sponsors, volunteers and the participants for their continuous support.
