MILPITAS, CA: The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) will host Miss America 2014 Nina Davuluri, the first Hindu American to win the Miss America contest, at its Annual Northern California Awareness Gala Dinner on Sunday, September 21 from 5 pm to 9 pm. The event, which will be held at the India Community Center in Milpitas, California, will feature a keynote talk by Ms Davuluri and celebrate HAF’s achievements and advocacy on behalf of the Hindu American community.

HAF has seen many milestones in 2014, including the successful passage through the state legislature of California Senate Bill 1057, which seeks to update the state’s nearly two decades old history-social science content standards, and create textbook content that portrays all groups fairly and accurately. Moreover, from human rights to The Bhutanese American Project to the annual DC Advocacy Days, HAF continues to provide a professional and progressive voice for our community.

“HAF’s Annual Gala Dinner is a unique opportunity to learn more about the world of Hindu American advocacy and why it matters for all of us,” said Samir Kalra, HAF’s Director/Senior Fellow for Human Rights. “It’s also a great occasion for attendees to hear Nina Davuluri’s journey as Miss America 2014, and interact with community, interfaith, and government leaders.”

The evening will include a social hour, a gourmet Indian vegetarian dinner, and feature a number of exciting guest speakers. The event is free and open to all, and offers a separate babysitting room with entertainment and activities for children ages 5 and up.
