World's largest lollipop dedicated to Sri Chinmoy

NEW YORK: The world's largest lollipop, weighing in at 6,706 pounds (3041 kg) set a Guinness World Record last week in New York City. Ashrita Furman, holder of the most Guinness records, was the architect behind the feat accompanied by an international team of over 25 assistants. To put it in perspective this single lollipop would be the equivalent of 165,070 regular-sized lollipops.

A follower of Sri Chinmoy, Furman dedicated his feat to the honor of the spiritual master, poet, author, artist and musician who inspired him and humanity with his meditation and world peace efforts on the occasion of his birth anniversary. "We know Sri Chinmoy for his compassion, kindness and sweetness and for that reason we are celebrating his birthday by making the largest lollipop," commented Furman.

The 25-foot (7.5m) long lollipop (from top to bottom including stick) is 10-inches (25 cm) thick with a 10-foot (3 m) diameter and a 31.4-foot (9.42 m) circumference and took almost one week to construct. The huge red candy is made of sugar and corn syrup, which was melted in 100-gallon (380 litres) pots and poured into a metal form. Far surpassing the previous lollipop record of 4,759 pounds this giant 6,706-pound candy delighted an audience gathered to view the towering confection.

Ashrita Furman has been breaking Guinness World Records since 1979, when he completed 27,000 jumping jacks to earn his first Guinness World Record. He set 236 official Guinness World Records, many of which were eventually broken.

On April 14, Furman became the first person to currently hold 100 Guinness Records. At the moment he holds 98 standing records. Other Guinness World Records by Furman include the largest flower bouquet (101,791 roses), the largest pencil(74 feet), bobbing 33 apples in one minute and covering a mile the fastest while twirling a hula hoop and balancing a milk bottle on his head. The 54-year-old has practiced Sri Chinmoy's meditation for over 30 years, which helps him to find the power, joy and concentration for his challenging records.
