LA Sargam hosts seniors’ day in San Fernando

WEST HILLS, CA: The San Fernando Valley is home to several thousand families of Indian sub-continent origin. Problems faced by Indian American seniors living alone or with children are no different from those faced by American senior citizens-alienation and loneliness.
Founded in 2008, LA Sargam is a Valley based organization to harness and eventually exhibit the Valley’s indigenous talent for Indian music. To pay them due respect and to recognize them for their hard work and sacrifice, LA Sargam hosted a Seniors’ Day on January 16 at Royal Delhi Palace Restaurant in West Hills, CA.

The event was emceed by Dr Sayal. In his welcoming statements he recognized the efforts of early immigrants in educating and settling their children to be highly productive members of the American society. Mrs. Urmila Mukerjee, a resident of Woodland Hills, CA, was at hand to greet the members of her Senior Citizens’ Club.

Avtar Chadda, founder of LA Sargam, declared January 16th to be a Seniors’ Day. He invited seniors present at the occasion to sing along, dance, and make special requests to hear the Bollywood songs of their choice. Chadda sang several songs of legendary Mohammed Rafi. Besides Chadda, several songs were rendered by Gurdip Grewal. Complementary snacks and lunch were provided by Baljit Singh Bhullar, owner of Royal Delhi Palace restaurant. Other singers, Suprio Chakraborthy, Noory, Hoshi, Imtiaz, Sunny and Shoba Vaswani also entertained the audience with their beautiful songs.

Banquet Hall was fully packed by Seniors representing different religions. Everybody appeared to be fully involved enjoying this event. Some seniors got up, expressed their joy and showered blessings.
