Jackie Skiles crowned Miss Artesia
ARTESIA: On May 23 a new Miss Artesia was crowned. The fabulous fifties themed event was filled with color, talent, beauty, grace and of course our very first Indian winner, Ayushka Singh.
Ayushka Singh made history last year by being the first Indian to win the crown and will now represent Artesia in the Miss California USA pageant to be held this November in Palm Springs.
The new court has six young ladies that will represent the city as Miss Artesia, Miss Artesia Teen and their princesses. Jackie Skiles was overjoyed as she was crowned Miss Artesia 2009 and Emily Gilliland was amazed when she was announced as Miss Artesia Teen 2009.
The Miss Princesses are Lorraine Llames and Kandice Perez and the Miss Artesia Teen Princesses are Marisa Romo and Jasmine Lucero who was also the winner of Miss Congeniality.
The contestants were judged on a personal interview with each judge, a short speech introduction explaining why they want to become Miss Artesia or Miss Artesia Teen, sportswear, as well as their confidence and grace in the evening wear segment and lastly the question and answer round.
It was also a time to bid farewell to the 2008 Royal Court which included Miss Artesia 2008, Ayushka Singh, Miss Artesia Teen 2008 Chelsie Cox, Miss Artesia Princess Marissa Lazalde and Susanna Batres and Miss Artesia Teen Princess Crystal Ibarra and Shannon Fitzgerald.
Ayushka was extremely emotional as she explained that her reign was filled with love, laughter, humility, blessings and memories to last a lifetime. We wish her the best of luck as she represents both the city of Artesia and the South Asian community at the Miss California USA pageant.
