CHICAGO: Over 750 community volunteers participated in BAPS Charities’ 16th annual walkathon organized on Sunday June 17. The 5K walkathon, held at Potawatomie Park in St. Charles, inspired people to go the extra mile to make a difference in someone’s life.
In keeping with its theme, “Building a Better Community, One Step at a Time”, the proceeds from this year’s walk will go to the American Cancer Society. With each step, participants of all ages joined hands and raised funds to build awareness for Cancer research.
“We are honored to walk for such a noble cause that will directly support the community that we call home,” said Akash Dave Project Lead of BAPS Charities. “This is a unique opportunity BAPS Charities has to bring together old and young to serve the community. We’re humbled by the energy of all the volunteers that have come out to make today a tremendous success.”
The American Cancer Society is an international organization that works to find cures and treatments for cancer as well as organize programs for cancer patients to make treatment more accessible. A portion of the walk’s proceeds will be donated directly to the Arlington Heights branch of the organization.
“This was my first year raising money for the walk,” said eight-year-old Tilak Patel of West Chicago, “I learned about cancer in school and I want to help stop it. I had my dad take me door-to-door each night after dinner, and also asked him to take my pledge form to work.”
Many leaders from surrounding municipalities came to supports the walkers as well, including Illinois State Representative Randy Ramey; US Congressman Joe Walsh; Greg Martin and Patricia Kelly, Bartlett Village Trustees; and John Dabrowski, Bloomingdale Township Chair.
“Thank you BAPS,” said Congressman Joe Walsh, “You inspire us… You are giving your time today for a cause that is greater than you.”
With over 46 centers participating in similar walks across North America, this is just one of many initiatives that BAPS Charities takes to support local communities. Throughout the year, BAPS Charities hosts medical fairs, education and career development seminars, blood drives and much more. BAPS Charities sincerely serves the community, by improving the quality of life of individuals and families.
