Palatine Opportunity Center to host cultural fair

poc-webPALATINE: Palatine Opportunity Center (POC), a not for profit organization, is hosting cultural fair on Thursday September 5 from 10 am to 2 pm at 1585 N Rand Rd Palatine, a northwest Chicago suburb.

POC provides many community services to under-privileged people in the area. They have free medical Clinic, small library, Harper Community College classes for English learning, Citizenship classes, computer classes, nursery school, dance and aerobic classes, help and guidance for youngsters, utility help for people who can’t afford and also help for Senior Citizens. People from many nationalities utilize their free services. They also have summer community garden where people get fresh home grown vegetables.

About 12-13 countries will have their booths displaying items depicting their culture. Most of them will have their food for tasting. There will be two fashion shows, one in the beginning around 10 am and the second around noon showing their native dresses. Some countries will show case their folk dances. People have specially asked for turban tying demonstration at the fair.

Ms. Kathy Millin, Director POC said, “By hosting cultural fair, we are trying to expose the culture of all the people we serve. Most of the local people have no clue about the rich culture people bring with them when they come to United States.”
