R K Academy tops at Spain dance festival

CHICAGO: RK Dance Academy headed by Pika Munshi bagged top honor during International Folk Dance festival held recently in Spain.
The festival held at Lloret De Mar near Barcelona, Spain had groups representing different parts of the world showcasing, sharing and appreciating the diversity and richness of their cultures. “It was our proud privilege that we were representing United States of America, and its varied heritage with unity through dance and music. We had India folkdance presented at the festival and we were placed first,” Munshi said.
She added that the purpose of participation in such festivals is to provide the most suitable common ground for promotion of mutual understanding and enrichment between the cultures. It contributes to the development of children and building of harmony and peace amongst each other. “I took 15 young artists between ages of 12-15 years and they definitely had the most unforgettable experience,” she said.
Munshi was accompanied with her gurus, Mrinalini Sarabhai (Amma) and Mallika Sarabhai from Darpana Academy, India.
“My past experience inspired me to enroll my academy in such type of international event. I wanted to take the initiative to utilize my experience and endowment to train the young artists to signify the various dances of India and USA. We represented three different dances: Gujarati Garbo, Punjabi Bhangra and American Jazz. We also took part in the dance competition while in Barcelona. The R.K. Dance Team was placed first in the junior, ethnic dance, formation division,” she told this paper.
There were around 18 different countries present at the festival including the United States, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia, Italy, Turkey, Poland, Ireland, Australia, Haiti, Thailand, Japan, and many more. The opening ceremony started with parade and then participants exchanged gifts amongst the groups.
