
Sikhs participate in Memorial Day celebrations
CHICAGO: More than 60 Sikhs from Northwest Suburbs of Chicago, participated in Memorial Day celebration in Schaumburg, a northwest suburb of Chicago.
Two Sikhs from World War II were the main attraction. S Gurdev Singh Bhattal and Mukand Singh Dhaliwal attended the function. Dhaliwal also participated in hosting the Color Guard accompanied by Thakar Basati who was one of the organizers for the event along with many veteran organizations of Schaumburg and Hoffman Estates Mayors of Schaumburg and Hoffman Estates Al Larson and William McLeod, attended the event and both addressed the gathering. Veterans also instituted an award to a young person who helps the veterans. This year’s award went to Eagle Scout Michael Einig. Athena Saldhena, Junior at JB Conant High School was invited to talk about US Constitution. She is also from India.
Sikhs donated money to the picnic that was enjoyed in beautiful weather at around 80+ degree. Veterans thanked the Sikhs for participation and for showing up to be part of the community. There are many heroic stories of Sikhs fighting in World Wars. Many medals were won by Sikhs, yet they got very little recognition. The younger generation has no clue. Sikhs put up banners depicting number of Sikhs killed in World Wars. Many books have been written about Sikh gallantry.
Both Village of Schaumburg and Hoffman Estates invited the Sikhs to get more involved and participate next year.
