Sunita Kanumury to be next AAPI President

NEW YORK: New Jersey-based allergist and immunologist Dr. Sunita Kanumury has been elected President of American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) for 2011-2012.

Dr. Narendra Kumar has been elected president-elect; Dr. Jayesh Shah – vice president; Dr. Ravi Jahagirdar – secretary, Dr. Seema Jain -treasurer and Dr. Satish Anand- Chair of Board of Trustees for the same period.

Dr. Kanumury, a native of Andhra Pradesh, will take over the reins of one of the largest and influential Indian-American organizations from Dr. Ajeet R. Singhvi at the end of AAPI Convention to be held at Hilton New York Hotel in Manhattan, New York between June 22 and 26.

Dr. Kanumury has been in private practice in the field of allergy and immunology for the past 18 years as practicing consulting allergist. She is a diplomat of the American Board of Allergy and Immunology and fellow member of the American College for Allergy and Immunology.

Currently serving president-elect of the outgoing committee, Dr. Kanumury has served the organization in various capacities such as Member, Board of Trustees; Regional Director, Mid-Atlantic AAPI (NJ, NY, PA); Chairman of Alumni Committee for AAPI Convention in 2007; Member, Benefits Committee and Ethics & Grievance Committee; Vice President & Founding Member, AAPI Northwest New Jersey; Member at large, Federation of AAPI (Tri-State)

She is active in the community and served as President of Association of Allergists & Immunologists from India; Vice President and Secretary, Telugu Fine Arts Society of New Jersey; Trustee, Vasavi Society of New York & New Jersey, and Board of Directors, Federation of Indian Associations (FIA).

Outlining her vision, Dr. Kanumury said she would empower AAPI politically to protect professional survival, make AAPI financially stable, promote accountability and transparency to foster unity and shun parochial tendencies to help improve AAPI’s image in public.

Dr. Narendra R. Kumar, currently serving as vice president will become president-elect for the new committee. A resident of Freeland, MI, Dr. Kumar has served the AAPI in various positions such as secretary, treasurer, chair of the journal resource committee, regional director and past president of Association of Kerala Medical Graduates (AKMG).

The new vice president Dr. Jayesh Shah is wound care, hyperbaric medicine physician in San Antonio, Texas. The Medical Director of South West Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine, he was elected for a second term on the American Medical Association International Medical Graduate (AMA -IMG) Governing Council. Dr. Shah was recently selected to serve as Chair of the AMA IMG Governing Council for the 2009-2010 year. He was earlier secretary and treasurer of national AAPI.
