CHICAGO: A group of Indian Americans in Chicagoland headed by Balwinder Singh and a newly appointed member of Nancy Pelosi Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) cabinet, Vinesh Virani, have announced hosting a fund raiser for DCCC in Chicago on July 15.

In a talk to this paper, a DCCC Cabinet member Balwinder Singh said that the fundraiser was the outcome of a talk with Rep Nancy Pelosi who was in Chicago on May 16 on her way to Milwaukee WI. She is credited with the view that a fundraiser event in Chicagoland next month would be a welcome idea as Democrats are determined to wrest the control of the House as soon as possible and this would necessitate huge campaign funds. She inducted Vinesh Virani, a community activist, into DCCC Cabinet to strengthen the Chicago base and both these members agreed to collect funds for the Democratic Party at the national level.

Balwinder Singh has been very active in the political scene. He was one of the foremost Indian Americans who supported Barack Obama a decade ago when he was little known outside Chicago and was seeking Senate seat vacated by Carol Mosley Braun. He said it was in the interest of Indian Americans and also that of India that Democrats gain control of the House. It was in this context that both Virani and Singh took initiative to host a fundraiser next month.

Virani said that the venue for the fundraiser event is not decided as yet but would be somewhere in the north side. He said he would work hard with Singh to create awareness among Indian Americans to elect as many Democrats to the House of Representatives and Senate so that “our views are heard and concerns addressed.”

Traditionally it is Democrats who have been helping minority communities, including Indians and it was after the initiative of John F Kennedy who commenced Indian Peace Crops that more and more Indians started coming to USA for settlement. He said that Nancy Pelosi has agreed to come to the fundraiser event in July.

The DCCC is the official campaign arm of the Democrats in the House of Representatives. DCCC had at least $17 million of debt heading into 2011, having tapped a big bank credit line in a failed bid to retain the House majority on Election Day. It still faces a challenge overcoming that debt while still having the resources to back challengers and incumbents.

Rep. Steve Israel will head the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee for the 2012 election cycle, a move that will vault the 52-year-old New Yorker into his party’s leadership ranks during what promises to be a political season for House Democrats. Israel was tapped by Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) for the DCCC.
