NEW YORK: Making waves at the Sundance Film Festival this year in Park City, Utah was renowned composer Gingger Shankar, who debuted her latest film project Himalaya Song.

Rated one of the 10 Best Music Films at Sundance 2012 by Rolling Stone magazine, Shankar’s Himalaya Song is a musically infused cinematic performance that explores this majestic mountain range and its interconnecting cultures as the region undergoes major environmental and ecological change.

Featuring live narration by filmmaker Mridu Chandra and musical performances by musicians Gingger Shankar (vocals/double violin) and Dave Liang (piano/electronics), this live multimedia presentation combines modern sounds and ancient instruments with a cinematic journey through the Himalayan past and present, exploring folktales, mythological narratives, contemporary ways of survival, and tomorrow’s inevitable changes in the great melting glaciers.

A classically trained violinist and renowned composer in her own right, Shankar is the daughter of internationally renowned violinist L. Subramaniam and niece of double-violinist L. Shankar. Collaborating with Chinese musician David Liang and filmmaker Mridu Chandra, Shankar infused modern electro-sounds and ancient instruments to tell the story of the geographic region that is currently burdened by melting glaciers and major ecological changes.

Gingger was also on the roster of the 2012 Sundance Alumni Advisory Board.

Shankar has earlier worked with artists like the Smashing Pumpkins, Cheap Trick and scored the critically acclaimed Mel Gibson film The Passion of the Christ. She is the only female and one of two double-violinists in the world.
