GSSC’s Uttarayan was a success

GSSC’s Uttarayan was a successThe Gujarati Society of Southern California (GSSC) held its annual ‘Uttarayan’ (Kite Flying) festival at Twila Reid Park in Anaheim on January 11, 2020, hosting over 800 people. The non profit organization, which seeks to connect Gujaratis in Southern California, organized the event by inviting community members to enjoy the traditional Gujarati festival of ‘Makarsankranti’ through kite flying, potluck, music, and a picnic.

The event was organized by the youth chapter of GSSC and was enjoyed by participants from multi-generations on a beautiful sunny and breezy day. Over 300 pairs of ‘patang’ and ‘firki’ (kites and string) were imported from India. With blaring music and people getting passionate about kite flying, the event lasted all afternoon.

For many, it was their first ‘Uttarayan’ event, and for others, it brought home memories of celebrating the festival in India. Regardless, all had one thing in common: it was a fun way to spend time with family, friends, and community with a bit of a competitive streak while yelling ‘kai po che’ when they successfully cut away another flying kite.

GSSC’s next event for the youth is ‘Masala Mixer’ on Friday, February 7, 2020, at The Spice

Garden, formerly known as Yellow Chili, in Buena Park from 7 PM – 12 AM. Masala Mixer is a meet and greet for singles looking for their significant other. We provide a space and an experience where, through fun and games, singles get to mingle with interested participants.GSSC’s Uttarayan was a success

The meet and greet will be followed by a dance party.

Another upcoming youth organized event is ‘Holi Hai’ on Sunday, March 15, 2020, at Whittier Narrows Recreation Area in South El Monte. We will be having organic holi colours and water guns, a variety of food trucks, DJ, and much more fun to go along with that.
