TALLAHASSEE, Florida: The Florida House has again sent the Senate a high-profile bill banning sanctuary city policies and requiring local law enforcement officials to cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
The bill passed on a 69-45 vote May 1. The Senate previously passed its version of the bill, but it was amended in the House and must go back.
One key difference is the House’s insistence on including fines for officials who adopt sanctuary policies, which Senate leaders oppose. Lawmakers have only a few more days to work out differences before the legislative session ends.
The legislation would require local officials to honor US Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainers for undocumented immigrants who are arrested or convicted of a crime.
