LPU student brings glory to India at South Asian Games

PHAGWARA: Helping India reach at the top of medal tally in 13th South Asian Games 2019 held in Kathmandu, Nepal, Gurpreet Singh, a bachelor of arts second-year student of Lovely Professional University (LPU) won two silver medals, a varsity release stated.

He exhibited extraordinary shooting skills and won medals in both centre fire pistol individual and centre fire pistol team events at SAG 2019.

Including the LPU student’s two medals, India finished on top spot with over 300 medals for the 13th time consecutively in the South Asian Games, widening the gap in the medal tally with second-placed Nepal and third-placed Sri Lanka.

Gurpreet joined hands with India’s other athletes, swimmers, wrestlers, boxers to bring glory to India during these games. Based on the assessment of his extraordinary sports skills, he is presently pursuing distance education program at LPU with 100 per cent scholarship, as per university policy. 

Prior to this too, Gurpreet had revealed his sporting abilities at various prestigious competitions in international and national levels. Belonging to village Naushehra Pannuan of district Tarn Taran in Punjab state, Gurpreet is a recipient of many prestigious honors and awards. He is now aspiring to participate in Olympics 2020 and win a prestigious medal for the university and the country.

Already an Arjuna Award recipient and Olympian, Gurpreet has to his credit international medal in 25–meter standard pistol individual competitions (men) at the 52nd ISSF World Shooting Championship held in South Korea. He represented India in Rio Olympics 2016 and secured seventh place in 25-meter rapid fire pistol event. He won gold medals (with games record) in 25-meter and 10-meter rapid fire pistol (pairs) events and a bronze medal in a 25-meter individual event in the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games. He won a silver medal in 25-meter centre fire pistol men’s team event during the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon), South Korea.

 Expressing pride over Gurpreet’s achievements, LPU Chancellor Ashok Mittal further encouraged him to gain more illustrious victories to bring name and fame to self, parents, institution, state and the nation.

LPU distance education provides “Affordable & Accessible Higher Education” study option which is suitable for candidates seeking government, corporate jobs, promotion in jobs, further studies and immigration to foreign lands.
