NEW YORK: More than 200 people gathered to celebrate Baisakhi on May 11, at an event organized by the Indian Consulate in New York in association with the Sikh Art and Film Foundation.

Consul General Prabhu Dayal said on the occasion that the Consulate has been celebrating all festivals such as Diwali, Dussehra, Eid, Christmas, Baisakhi with the involvement of Indian community organizations. He said that Baisakhi was celebrated all over India, but it was particularly significant for the Sikh community as it was on this day that Guru Gobind Singh had founded the Sikh Khalsa. The Consul General thanked community members for turning up in such a large number for celebrating the festival at the Consulate.

Kanwar Sibal, former Foreign Secretary of India, who was the Chief Guest at the function, said he appreciated the role of the Indian-American community for strengthening India’s relations with the United States. He said that in the past there had been some hurdles which impeded the full growth of bilateral relations but these were being slowly removed. He said the potential for the growth of Indo-US relations was very high and exhorted the Indian-American community to continue working for bringing the two countries closer.

Teji Bindra, President of the Sikh Art & Film Foundation also addressed the gathering and explained the significance of Baisakhi. He said there was a high level of interest in America in Sikh religion and a Chair on Sikh Studies had been set up at Hofstra University.
