CHICAGO: The nine month old Art of Living Center in Schaumburg (a north side suburb of Chicago) may not and cannot rival the 381 acre spread of the North Carolina Ashram but so far as the devotion, enthusiasm and commitment on the part of volunteers and workers are concerned, it cannot be dwarfed in comparison.
This was quite in evidence recently when the local outfit of this global organization with headquarters in India, organized a live music concert with India famed artist Sachin Limaye at its Schaumburg facility to raise funds and create awareness about its various programs now and in the near future. The near three hours program attended by a few hundred devotees of Guruji Sri Sri Ravi Shanker, Chicago elites and the media representatives, was a huge success in that it helped raise a fairly good amount for the North Carolina Ashram and some of the activities being pursued locally. Besides, it helped in creating huge awareness of the need for spiritual awakening and happiness under Guruji’s guidance and following Art of Living principles.
Sachin Limaye with his accompanying artists on tabla, rhythm and keyboard mesmerized a small but very enthusiastic crowd with rendering one after the other of bhajans (devotional songs) and kirtan intermixed with ghazals. Shaila Khedker, a local artist, charmed with her melodious voice singing an erstwhile Bollywood number – Tu Malik Tere Bande.
Sachin was outstanding in his performance and striking a happy rapport with the audience most of whom kept clapping during his singing. Many were so enamored that they started dancing back side of the hall initially which later on engulfed the entire hall. His Gujarati bhajan on Shree Nathaji was well received and so also his renderings of devotional songs praising Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva. His Shiva kirtan saw members of the audience dancing till the end.
Another highlight was the announcement made by Katherine Thorat, Air India Sales Chief Chicago, giving two round trip tickets to the organization as a goodwill gesture.
She exhorted those attending the concert to patronize he national air career as it has a direct flight from Chicago to New Delhi with easy connections to nine different cities in India. Besides, she touted excellent inflight service and serving Indian cuisine to meet the religious requirements of all flying Air India. The two tickets were instantly sold after a spirited bidding for $3500. Anju Sharma conducted the ticket raffle successfully.
Earlier, Patricia Montella, an ardent follower of Art of Living organization, gave a video presentation of the North Carolina Ashram with its top scenic view, various facilities including great accommodation, modern kitchen and meditation hall. She then exhorted those present to come out with donations to see the timely fruition of Ashram and its various existing and programmed facilities. Her goading and exhortation brought out favorable response with even schoolchildren donating their weekly-monthly allowances for this good cause. The collection topped $20,000, a good figure by any standard.
The Art of Living organization has bought a magnificent piece of property just outside of Boone, NC ((It’s only 3 hours from Knoxville!). The new ashram is located at Heavenly Valley, which was once the ashram for the TM movement. It is truly an amazing place with buildings already being there, but requiring some maintenance to get them back to their true glory. It is at the top of a mountain with breathtaking views in all directions. A gigantic meditation hall, conference center with a full kitchen, classrooms and some 400 apartments are already there.
In addition to the core offerings, the International Center also plans to host a Naturopathy Wellness Spa that will help restore balance and reawaken the body’s natural healing mechanisms. These treatments will complement the yoga and meditation techniques as part of a comprehensive approach to healthy living. Sri Sri has announced that Guru Purnima will be held this summer. Once rehabilitated, the new ashram will be the largest Art of Living facility in the world.
Dhrieta Sikora emceed the event. Nita Virani said that the Schaumburg facility will conduct Art of Living courses from June 18-21, July 10-13 and August 10-12 at its Schaumburg facility. She also announced celebrating Guru Purnima on July 4. Vinesh Virani helped successfully conducting the entire program and proposed a vote of thanks.
