PHAGWARA: “You have given honor to a man from a ‘mazdoor parivar’ by catapulting him to a central minister and I will remember it my whole life with every pore of my body being indebted to you”. That was how Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Som Parkash Kainth thanked voters during a mammoth thanks-giving rally held here June 15.
“I come from a humble family and you have made me ‘Kendri mantri’. What more I can expect?” remarked the bureaucrat-turned politician amid cheers.
Declaring that he will bring big ticket projects for the constituency, the minister said that he will repay the debt of the voters through all-round phased but quick-paced development of the constituency.

“I have never expected it but you made it possible by standing by me through thick and thin,” he told the huge gathering.
Taking to task his detractors, the former IAS officer said that people proved them as well as political pundits wrong by ensuring his victory from Hoshiarpur Lok Sabha (Reserved) constituency.
“My detractors predicted my defeat by at least 30,000 votes. Some said I will lose by 50,000 votes but the electorate turned the tables on them by ensuring my victory by a margin of 48,000 votes”, he said.

He lambasted those “double-faced people” who rode on two boats, telling them bluntly that “one cannot have the cake and eat it too” (“donan hathan vich laddoo nahi ho sakde”).
Attributing his victory to public trust in him as well as the Modi wave in the country, Som Parkash said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become a household name.
“Modi’s ‘sikka’ (writ) ran in the whole world that has been bowled over by him”, he said.

“Modiji has done India proud the world over and ‘bacha bacha Modi de naam nu janada’ (every child knows Modi’s name),” he remarked.
Giving a clarion call to the voters to girdle up their lions for the by-poll for Phagwara, Som Parkash asserted that it will also be won by his party whenever it is held.
It may be mentioned here that Som Parkash was sitting MLA from Phagwara before becoming MP.
He resigned June 3, necessitating a by-poll from Phagwara (Reserved) assembly seat.

The Phagwara assembly segment falls in Hoshiarpur Lok Sabha constituency.
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) vice-president Jarnail Singh Wahid, Halqa in-charge Sarwan Singh Kular, Phagwara Mayor Arun Khosla, BJP leaders Ramesh Sachdeva, Rakesh Duggal, Inderjit Khalyan, and Paramjit Singh Pamma also spoke at the event.
Som Parkash’s wife Aneeta Som Parkash, Deputy Mayors Surinder Singh Walia and Ranjit Singh Khurana were present.
