CHANDIGARH: Five engineering students here have developed a GPS based ‘safety helmet’, aimed at providing timely first aid, in case of any disaster, to workers at construction, mining and industrial sites in case any disaster.
The students of Aryans College of Engineering, hailing from Kashmir, presented this GPS-and-GSM-based helmet to Haryana Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki at Raj Bhawan here today.
Sharing the features of the helmet, Gurdeep Singh, HoD, Civil Department, Aryans Group said this unique helmet consists of three main parts – GPS system, GSM module and an antenna.
“The GPS system will first receive signals from satellite through an antenna attached to it. The information retrieved from these signals is fed to GSM module. The module has a sim card slot, which will transfer this information to the system,” he said, adding, “Use of particular web link enables us to locate the position of that system on Google Map.”
Imtiyaz Ahmad Shah, the student group leader said, “According to Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 1000 lives per year are lost while at jobs and one out of every five is at a construction site.”
“Most of these deaths occur due to non-availability of first-aid in time. So this helmet will help in finding the persons stuck under debris and to provide help as early as possible.”
Giving more information, other students, Hanan Bashir, Sajid Zahoor, Javaid Ahmad and Suhail Ahmad, said they are working on advancement of the project by installing a sensor based emergency button.
The button would turn on an alarm in case the person requires first aid by sensing the pressure or other emergency need, they said.
The Governor appreciated the student’s efforts and said that this helmet was an innovation and a wonderful project.
He said the helmet would help locate the victims of accidents at much faster rate and enable saving of thousands of lives at construction sites, Solanki added.
Anshu Kataria, Chairman, Aryans Group said with fast developing technology, students are coming up with innovative ideas. Aryans students have earlier developed “Save Kashmir Android App”, “Life saving Glove” among others. -PTI
