The Role of Luck in Different Types of Competitive Games

The role of luck in competitive games has been always controversial and it has lead to never-ending complaints from all types of gamers, whether they are amateurs or pros, players never stop whining about losing just because the luck wasn’t on their side and it is not only the players who complain about luck, their fans also whine about their favorite players getting knocked out because of bad luck.

It is no secret that luck plays an important role in competitive games and it brings out randomness that can completely shift the game from one side to another, shift the balance, and provide the losing players wiih an excuse for losing the game instead of feeling bad about their performance.

There are some games that involve no luck factor and the masters of these games will crush you every time, no matter what. This includes games such as Chess, Go, Checkers, etc that involve no randomness and everything is based purely on skill.

Luck plays an important role in almost every competitive game, be it a game of absolute luck such as coin flipping, dice rolling, or a game of execution luck such as basketball, First Person Shooters, bowling, etc. The games that are based purely on skill and not luck usually involve no randomness but there aren’t many games that are dependent wholly and solely on skills, the luck factor is always involved in most games.

With that being said, let’s have a closer look at the role of luck in different types of competitive games:

Absolute Luck Games

There are several games that involve absolute luck and in those games, there comes a point where no amount of experience, skill, or game knowledge can help you win the game or prevent you from losing. You are at the absolute mercy of luck, be it the rolling of dice, coin flipping, or the cards, you can’t prevent anything from happening, you either win or lose. Such games include Dice Rolling, Coin Flipping, Bingo, etc.

Execution Luck Games

These games usually depend on both luck and skills. It usually involves unusual variance in performance and sometimes the players are able to perform above their level while at other times, they would perform even below average.

Let’s take a competitive shooter game such as CS: GO for an example. In such a shooter game, there comes a time when even the greatest players cannot make headshots all the time, no matter how much they grind and practice unless they’re aim-batting. Sometimes, it is someone’s good day and they are performing really well, while at other times, the players are performing below average just because it is not their day.

When such events happen then it doesn’t mean that the players don’t have the required skill to win the game, it just means that the luck isn’t on their side and it is due to random variations that are causing their performance to be sub-average.

There are also other games available that involve both your skill and luck such as Bodoland Lottery, Teer Lottery Games, etc. The Lottery and Teer Result is dependent on both your luck and skill. If luck is one your side and you play the game the right way then it wouldn’t be difficult for you to win a game of Lottery.

RNG Luck Games

RNG stands for ‘Random Number Generator’ and in the gaming context, it refers to any situation in which the outcome is random. Usually, card games are a part of RNG Luck in which card drawing occurs and cards are randomly distributed among the layers. However, the effects of RNG luck are different from others and it gives the players a chance to counterbalance the randomness with their skills.

Let us take Poker for an example in which the cards are dealt randomly but the professional players can eliminate the factor of luck by their skills. RNG luck does have some kind of effect on the game but if someone is good at the game then he can easily mitigate the factor of luck and counterbalance it with his skill.

Luck plays an important role in all kinds of competitive games unless a game is based purely on skills. Luck can help you win a game if it is on your side but you also lose when the luck cards are not in your favor. So yeah, luck brings randomness to almost every game and it is your luck that determines whether it favors you or not.Â
