Women Empowerment Webinar organized by Bay Area Tamil Manram (BATM), in collaboration with Sacremento Tamil Mandrum was conducted on April 25th, 6-7 pm PST.
The speaker was Dr. Shantha Mohan, who currently serves as Executive In Residence at Carnegie Mellon University’s Integrated Innovation Institute and author of the book “ Roots and Wings: Inspiring Stories of Engineering Women in India”.

The webinar was well attended with over 80 participants, covering different demographics, such as experienced as well as new working professionals, homemakers, college and school students. The presentation provided insight into the concept of women empowerment, its progress, current state and challenges.

Topics such as gender inequality in pay, cultural stereotyping, work and home life balance were discussed. As Dr. Shantha aptly quoted from Swami Vivekananda, “Until there is improvement in women’s status, we cannot think the world has grown. A bird cannot fly with only one wing.”

The Q&A session that followed the presentation was lively and effectively addressed with questions from the audience using both a pre-collected and live format.
